James Holzhauer’s run on Jeopardy! ends shy of report

  1. I had a feeling this was going to happen once the very first clue he chose was the Daily Double. That left him with little chance of getting out of the first round with a big lead.

If he would have won today with his average daily winnings, he would have pa**ed Jennings. It’s a bit poetic that *this* is the episode that he loses.

I’m interested to see how far Emma goes. IIRC, the lady who beat Jennings finished her second game in the negative. I feel like Emma will win at least a few more games.

As a regular Jeopardy viewer, it’s going to be a bit weird going back to the merry-go-round of champions and daily winnings in the $10-20k range.

Edit: a lot of people are questioning his Final Jeopardy bet. It was the optimal bet. [See here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/jeopardy/comments/bwju0v)

  2. Holzhauer vs. Rutter vs. Jennings is going to be insane. They should forget the tournament and just go straight to a final with those three. Also they should make it like a week long and keep the money earned from prior games in the series on the board. I want to see someone wager 100k on a daily double!

  3. I was very upset to get a notification from the New York Times app very clearly implying he would lose, almost 12 hours before the episode would air.

  4. So I haven’t watched a single episode with him on it and only read about it on reddit. I took off work today and figured i’d watch him live and it just happened to be the episode he lost….sorry James

  5. Shy of the record is a kick in the pants, but hopefully that ~2.5 million helps console him. Thoughts and prayers!

  6. Jenning’s reaction: [https://twitter.com/KenJennings/status/1135703484697681921?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet](https://twitter.com/KenJennings/status/1135703484697681921?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet)

  7. This was an incredible streak by James, I am disappointed that he lost, but he had 33 really good games with all time scores. We will probably never see a player be that ballsy again. Plus, Emma and Jay played a great game too, especially Emma. I’m really glad to witness this streak, and Alex Trebek saw an amazing streak like this too.

  8. Plot twist: he did not retire from professional gambling and bet $2 million on himself losing before breaking the all-time record.

  9. Really unlucky with the daily doubles, which ended the streak. If he gets that first daily double just a bit later, or he gets any of the second round daily doubles, he wins 100%.

But Emma played super well and locked him out of winning in the second round. And James got unlucky with his DD in the first round by getting it way too early.

  10. I’m annoyed with the internet today. NYT and WaPo had articles on their front page at like 10 am PT revealing he had lost. No effort to not spoil this episode. Sad to see James go.

  11. “Enough is enough.” – Alex Trebek

His signature smile will remind me of his incredible streak.

  12. I got to say, this episodes contestants were really good. I was also surprised that the winner seemed to be able to match James`s buzzer-timing even though he has had a long time to practice.

Also it was kind of interesting, I always thought James demise would come from failing on one of his risky betting, turned out to be the other way around.

  13. I mean, he’s *pretty* good, but no one will ever top the real Jeopardy! champion: me, watching from home, when no one else is in the room.

  14. Jennings vs James is about to get that “Godzilla vs Kong” treatment. Make it happen Jeopardy!

  15. James’ Reign of Terror is over. No longer will he get the opportunity to consistently bury young talent

  16. Holy crap! I did my theater tech hours in undergrad with Emma! Small world lol way to put that knowledge to use!!!

  17. The fact that this story is running on ESPN tells me that their editorial direction is completely in the trash heap.
