Favorite Anime Film? (Your Name - Foreign Film Friday) 4

All That Film is tackling anime for Foreign Film Friday all the month of June

To kick issues off we reviewing Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name

We have been on the lookout for solutions for favourite anime movies to assessment, my private favorites are The Boy and the Beast, 5 cm per second, The Lupin the Third, Paprika, Cowboy Bebop Movie, and Sword and the Stranger. Can’t wait to listen to everybody’s fantastic solutions.

  1. Here’s something that few people have seen: **The Sky Crawlers**.

It’s written-directed by Mamoru Oshii, who made the extraordinary **Ghost in The Shell** films.

**The Sky Crawlers** is something like a cross between **Blade Runner** and **Never Let Me Go**. It’s set in an alternate history future that feels like a mash-up of clothing, cars, planes, and architecture from the 1930s through the early ’50s, which helps give the film a noir mood. In this “Future-Past,” war is perpetual (a la **1984**) but has been relegated to controlled Air Battles that the populace enjoys on television. The story is told from the point of view of the warrior pilots –who we learn are all (eternally) children who are never really old enough to understand all the existential consequences of their role in society. When one of these young pilots starts to have doubts about the system –once he begins an affair with an older female superior officer, who seems to know more about what’s going on than him– the movie takes on a very melancholy, fatalistic, doomed-love-story tone that is pretty unique in animated movies. (And the multiple aerial combat sequences are remarkable.)

  2. Perfect Blue is possibly the best anime, if not, the best animated film ever made.

I also absolutely adore End Of Evangelion and Akira.
