Donnie Darko was launched in theaters primarily due to Christopher Nolan. “It virtually went on to the Starz community. We needed to beg them to place it in theaters. Christopher Nolan stepped in and satisfied Newmarket to place it in theaters,” states Richard Kelly

  1. And ironically, it bombed at the cinemas. Pulling in just 7.5 million, after costing 4.5 million.

Poor advertising, due in part to its plane crash scene and being released a month after September 11,

It wasnt until home release that it developed its cult following.

  2. I wonder if Donnie Darko would be one of, let’s say, 30 films Nolan would like us to see. Guess we will never know.

  3. I watched that movie every night for weeks after I first saw it when I was a teenager. Why do I like it so much?

  4. When I went to see Donnie Darko in the theater when it came out in Los Angeles all of The Strokes sat in the row behind me in a mostly empty movie theater.

  5. Did Nolan really have much clout in 2000 or 2001? I know he had just made Memento but that only just put him on the map. He didn’t have carte blanche till after TDK.

  6. Donnie Darko has a lot of big ideas that don’t usually seem like a perfect fit to a mainstream audiences. It’s nice that Nolan helped to give the movie a push (when he wasn’t such a big name like he is today), but DK’s reputation has been built mostly by a cult following that discovered the film way after its theatrical release.

  7. It’s a great movie but the “sequel” was so bad it almost takes away from the original. Love when Hollywood does this!

  8. Just avoid the directors cut people. It adds bullshit chapters, book pages, explanations and stuff. Original version had better atmosphere and music

  9. I still love the exchange between the Gyllenhaals at the dinner table in the movie.

“You can go suck a fuck!”

  10. So Christopher Nolan is the asshole I have to blame for all my friends in 2002-2004 saying “HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?!” and putting on the DVD without my consent.
